representation stereotype

Stanley Hall (1904):
“ Adolescence is inherently a time of storm & stress when all young people go through some degree of emotional and behavioural upheaval, before establishing a more stable equilibrium at adulthood." Hall also argued that:
1. The common mood of teenagers is a state of depression.
2. Criminal activity increases between the ages of 12 & 24.
3. Young people are extreme and need excitement; “Youth must have excitement and if this is not at hand in the form of moral intellectual enthusiasms it is more prone to be sought in; sex, drink or drugs.”

Dick Hebdige (1988) argued youths are stereotyped as mixed metaphors of; “Youth as fun,” and “Youth as trouble maker.”

OLD AGE/DISABILITY
EVANS (1998), drawing on the works of Freud and other psychoanalysis, states:
“Disable people are seen as childish, dependant and underdeveloped and are regarding as ‘other’ and are punished by being excluded from ordinary life. Thus popular images and rhetoric of disabled people abound which comfort us with people who are imperfect, helpless, disgusting, shitty, dribbling – a threat to rigid ego boundaries.

Class
Richard Butsch (1992) who says working class males in the media are presented as; "Incompetent and ineffectual, often a buffoon, well-intentioned but dumb. In almost all working-class series, the male is flawed, some more than others..

Laura Mulvey (1975) argued women in the media are used as; ‘Erotic objects of desire for males on screen and in the audience,’ (Mulvey, 1975).

Gauntlett (2002) argues males in the media still follow traditional stereotypes as they are shown as, ‘Alpha males who control the action with violence,’ (Gauntlett, 2002).

because he is looking grumpy he fits this stereotype as an alpha male cause he looks aggressive.

Mackillon argues something slightly difference, ‘Males are now shown as sexual objects of desire who are more concerned with image,’ (Mackillon, 2002).

he fits this stereotype because he has his shirt off and has muscles.

                                        Regional/National Identity
Theorist Andrew Higson (1998) writes; “Identity is generally understood to be the shared identity of naturalized inhabitants of a particular political-geographic space – this can be a particular nation or region.”

On classic example in British Music Magazines of connoting it is a magazine for British readers is using the Union Jack flag and colours.

magnification stereotype

Theorist Andy Medhurst argues the media create stereotypes of groups/place through '"magnification of negative aspects of that group" (medhurst, 1998) he says this is done to make the ruling class (straight middle age, middle class males) feel superior.

cover analysis mojo

Age:22-50
Gender:mostly male
Social grade: C & E
Ethnicity: white
Interest: like to go to festivals and love loud music

Masthead-  in the masthead the word 'MOJO' stands out making it powerful and a lot more masculine which is what the target audience is aimed at, by using this writing it connotes that the genre could be something heavy like rock or indie. all the writing is bold, which gives off a very broad and powerful appeal to the audience. they have made their masthead white to sort of soften the hard rock tone they have given out white connotes to elegance and beauty and by using this on a male target audience it fits with hipster trends which work the audience demographics as black and white are popular colours. it also has a silvery drop shadow which connotes to music and metallic on the instrument which the target audience will have an interest in.

Colour pallet-  the colour pallet they have used is a mix of blue, white, grey, yellow, red and black. by using the splashes of yellow it connotes that the read will be exciting and interesting as the colour is so vibrant. they also use a mellow blue and white both of these colours work well together in a hipster sort of poster as they are popular colours in the group, they connote to happiness and spirit and gives the target audience reassurance that there favourite music genre will be in the magazine. the red stands out really well and has very much a leading roll in the colour pallet as it connotes too power and strength this will attract the audience as he red will bring them back to there youth and make them feel a lot younger and bring them memories.

Layout:  The layout is filled up leaving not many empty spaces and is very cramped this connotes that the magazine is full of information and pictures about many of there favourite artist. the layout will attract male audiences as they have a typical stereotype of being messy and love having everything at once

Images: The main image is a medium close up of Dave Grohl who is the former drummer of nirvana and the founder of the foo fighters he is the look of a steriotypical rocker as he's he's a showing a very serious face with a  beard with long hair dangling down his face he's also wearing a black shirt to go with his dark haired facial hair and long locks, but he doesn't look all black due to the lighting as it gives a good contrast between the dark and the light. The picture is very attracting to the target audience as he is a familiar faced guy who many people would of seen or heard of they may also look very similar to him as indie/rock fans will try to get there favourite celebrity styles. There are two other images on the front cover  it includes a medium long shot of a picture of David Gilmour in the top right and a feature of a cd cover in the bottom left of a festival crowd. Using a lot more images rather than just the main one attracts the audience with interest as mojo have used different sizes for there photo sizes, the audience will automitaclly go closer in to see the smaller images leading to the reading of words. men stereotypically will go for the images before the righting too hence why mojo always puts loads of images on there front covers.

Teasers/typography/lexis-  All the images have teasers to reveal more about the stories in the magazine and mojo have used theres too show they will have information about the album on the front cover and information about david and dave. they also have information around the side of the cover for example 'ELVIS the last mystery' will indicate that something would be about elvis and instantly theres some sort of mystery which audiences love! mojo have used specific and intriguing parts of their stories to boast on there cover. They are vey informal but very interesting for readers as its short and snappy, easy too read. the language represents the male target

Music videos

How is Media language used to attract and represent the target audience.

Kendrick lamar-swimming pools (drank)  https://vimeo.com/88402783

The media language follows hip hop inventions for a number of reasons, I've used Kendrick Lamars song swimming pools as its a really good video to use. In the video, Lamar uses different camera shots right at the very start, starting off with a close up of him self falling and facing the camera, the shot then changes to a medium-long shot to then an extreme long shot of him still falling. the angle used is at eye level and the camera never moves, only the shot type. this happens throughout the video  apart from a few sections and switches between kendrick and a female, kendrick puts a good looking female in  his music video to mainly attract male viewers, the female is wearing a black leotard and dances and moves when the shot type and angle changes, for example high and low angles are used after the alcoholic beverage is smashed as well as medium to long shots. the girl changes position each time to show her body off and to get the males attention, this happens quite often in hip-hop videos.
Usually in hip-hop they talk about their lives and they generally have a really bad upbringing which they like to write about in there songs. Lamars opening lyrics are 'now i done grew up round some people living their lives in bottles' he's saying that throughout his whole life he has had alcohol around him and with him and that its generally been a big part of his life, so he'd go to lots of partys, like the one in the video, 'pass out' and do it all again. lamar also has shots of alcohol bottles being smashed when he says 'drank' giving viewers who have generally had the same sort of upbringing with alcohol being able to relate to the video and song, this is why hip-hops main viewers and streamers are from poor upbringings and who have an addiction to some sort of substance, they are also mainly male men under the age of 27 with a social grade E.
Lamar is seen wearing a lot of gold chains and other jewellery around his neck and wrists whilst sitting in a dungy house with an alcohol bottle next to him. this shows what his house was like whilst growing up and shows that he did not have a lot of money then, but by that experience, he's earning money now, hence why he is wearing a red suit whilst falling and a white outfit in his house. most of the lighting throughout the video is very dark which lamar was used too 'i was in a dark room, loud tunes'

analysing covers

Age: 18-37
Gender: male
social grade:C1-E
Ethnicity: White
interests: festivals, chilling with friends, interested in playing music.

Masthead: In the NME its an abbreviation of new music express. its all in capitals. I've chosen to use bands in my masthead to show the sort of artists which would be in my magazine. The genre connotes too different, one of a kind sounds. the typography that has been used attracts the audience as its popular bands that they would know as they have an interest in the magazine. the mastheads font is 3D with white as the shadow this will attract the audience as its a dull background. it also has black outlines to make the font more defined.

The colour pallet i have used are quite dirty and rustic, not too many bright colours apart from the original red and white. the sort of earthy colours connote too the outside and really gets the indie theme.

The layout is really basic. nothing too crazy. its really simple yet bold and attracts the audience by the bright red. The layout connotes simplicity and authenticness in the magazine. its quite a grown up layout  and quite surphisticated but in a fun way.

The main image is a medium close up and it shows a bearded man standing outside wearing a hoodie, there is also birds in the back round. i have chose a middle aged man who is white  with stubble and a sweatshirt, this is because most of my target audience would look like that.

i have a bar code and and release date on my magazine as a feature, they aren't very big else the audience wouldn't like the magazine and be attracted to it≈
