Explain how and why producers of radio programmes target different audiences. refer to the Radio 1 live lounge to support your answer.
There are many different reasons as to why producers of radio programmes target different audiences. referring to my radio 1 live lounge which is Harry Styles covering The Chain by Fleetwood Mac, the two musicians cover a wide scale of generations, as well as appealing to radio 1s primary audience of 15-29 year olds.
Radios are struggling for listeners due to streaming online like youtube and the likes of Spotify and iTunes who are rising and so producers are now having to find a way of being able to appeal to those young audiences in a different way as well as trying to get a few more older listeners. One way the radio has been able to challenge the likes of Spotify and iTunes, is by being able to stream it online and on phones as well as putting videos on social media to attract others. The reason they have done this is to appeal to there younger audience who mainly spend there time on there phones and will find new things whilst being online and streaming with there friends. radio 1 and succeed this by being able top stream it online and watch covers of songs on the live lounge on youtube and social media as well as watching it on the BBC i-player app.
An Example of this would be Harry styles has a large audience of young teens mainly females who have enjoyed his old group one-direction songs and as he makes his way into his solo career he is trying to appeal to an even larger audience of people whilst making his own sense of style. Harry was first discovered on X-factor too, and will have also gained viewers from watching that. His social life would of also gained him some more viewers due to the dating of Taylor swift who is a pop-sensation, throughout the world. However by covering a older 60s/70s band who were a mix of British and American artists, who thrived the music industry with the likes of there songs being heard on Guardians of The Galaxy which have attracted them younger generation of listeners who love going to the cinema, there song 'the chain' is also a classic for the formula 1 soundtrack which attracted many people who love sport. Back in the 60/70 time they were the biggest band going and attracted a range of listeners from rock to pop and alternative. This meant that they attracted young adults as well as middle aged people due to there contrasting sounds.
By Radio 1 getting a young British pop idol to cover an American and British band on the century would have improved there listening figures and attracted audiences from: Young female teens, to X-Factor watchers, to Film watchers, sport fanatics and British and american listeners who want to feel nostalgic by listening to there favourite song once again.
